Nazila’s Story

From Darkness to Light

 

Chapter 1: Early Years and Early Hardships

Nazila was born in the spring of 1964 in the city of Urmia. At just nine years old, she lost her father—a tragic turning point that abruptly reshaped her comfortable life into one defined by hardship. For the first time, young Nazila came face-to-face with poverty. Friends and relatives who once gathered around her family’s table began looking down on her, turning their backs on her when she needed them most. Yet, through every adversity, Nazila remained kind-hearted and gentle, learning at a very young age the rare virtues of patience, purity, and resilience.

By the age of 17, a powerful government official in the Islamic Republic sought her hand in marriage. With his influence backed by weapons and soldiers, Nazila and her mother were powerless to refuse his demands directly. Desperate to protect her daughter, Nazila’s mother arranged for her escape to Turkey. At an age when most young girls are protected, Nazila found herself alone in a foreign country, forced to stand on her own two feet. She worked long hours in hotels and restaurants just to survive. There were times she had a roof over her head and food to eat, but also bitter periods of homelessness where she slept on the streets and was driven to extreme lengths just to quiet her hunger.

​​​​​​​​​Chapter 2: The UN Crossroads and a Second Chance

After 4 years of hardship in Turkey—including a heartbroken romance thwarted by social class prejudices—Nazila sought refugee status through the United Nations. On the day of her interview, her application was officially rejected. Shattered and hopeless, she walked out of the office into the hallway. Moments later, she heard footsteps approaching from behind. It was the UN caseworker who had just interviewed her. He asked her to marry him, explaining that through their marriage, she could travel with him to Canada and start over. Though he was a complete stranger, Nazila had no alternative. Accepting his proposal meant escaping the dangerous, precarious life of a solitary refugee in Turkey and securing a fresh start in Canada.

Within days, they were married at the UN administrative office and boarded a flight to Ottawa, Canada.

 

Chapter 3: A Self-Made Woman Emerges

Arrival in Canada did not mark the end of Nazila's trials. Soon after, her husband began exhibiting abusive behavior, subjecting her to severe domestic violence. Young, unable to speak English, and completely isolated in a new country, Nazila endured the situation quietly while awaiting her permanent residency process.

The breaking point arrived unexpectedly just 9 months after her arrival, when her husband called the police and falsely accused her of physical assault. Utterly unaware of what was happening, Nazila faced Canadian law enforcement for the first time. The police ordered her to leave the home immediately, issuing a no-contact order until the legal proceedings concluded.

Once again, Nazila was left completely homeless and unprotected—this time in a cold, unfamiliar country whose language she did not speak. She faced the heavy weight of judgment as an immigrant, finding no one to lean on. Yet, beneath her youth lay a wealth of lived experience, independence, and an unbreakable spirit. Refusing to remain a victim, she resolved to save herself.

Nazila dedicated herself tirelessly to learning English, studying immigration law, understanding criminal law, and mastering individual and social rights. Having lost her residency sponsorship, she took full control of her legal situation alone. This became the pivotal turning point of her life: Nazila vowed to dedicate her future to empowering immigrants, refugees, victims of domestic abuse, and newcomers facing complex legal systems—especially those judged or mistreated due to their race, language, culture, or attire

 

Chapter 4: Selfless Giving and Community Service

Nazila eventually remarried and became the proud mother of two sons. Through determination and hard work, she achieved financial prosperity—yet her home remained an open sanctuary for the homeless and vulnerable. Every dollar she earned was shared with those in need.

Her integrity, warmth, and selflessness earned her deep respect across the community. Lawyers, doctors, law enforcement officers, and business owners began offering their services completely pro bono at her request, creating a massive safety net for those who had nowhere else to turn. Driven by an endless capacity for compassion, Nazila ultimately sold her own residential home, pouring every last cent into social services and community aid.

 

Chapter 5: The Ultimate Trial and the Return of Kindness

In 2007, After selling her home in Ottawa, Nazila relocated to Toronto to expand her outreach. Devoting all remaining financial resources to her mission of serving the defenseless, she eventually faced the ultimate irony: she became homeless once again. During this dark period, many whom she had helped in the past turned away.

However, the seeds of kindness Nazila had planted over three decades bore fruit in an unexpected way. Mike Talisman—a man who had been a guest in Nazila’s home thirty years prior—had never forgotten her selflessness. Seeing her struggle, Mike opened his home to her, providing shelter, support, and protection.

 

Chapter 6: Mike’s Healing House and the Rise of "Lady Black"

This powerful act of gratitude birthed a greater movement. Today, Mike’s home has officially become Mike’s Healing House, opening its doors wide to anyone in need of healing, shelter, and community support.

 

Having walked through the deepest darkness and emerged stronger, Nazila adopted the name Lady Black—a symbol of a woman who rose from the shadows to pull others out of hardship. She officially founded her charitable organization, the Black Butterfly Foundation, where she continues her relentless work uplifting marginalized communities.

 

Her lifelong service has been recognized with numerous community leadership awards and accolades. Currently, Lady Black is preparing to release an inspiring podcast series designed to share her story, educate newcomers on their rights, and offer a beacon of hope to anyone navigating life's darkest chapters. She stands as living proof that no matter how deep the darkness, a single light can illuminate the way forward.
